The best YouTube tutorial for what she needed was forty-seven minutes long. She watched three of those minutes… then opened Gemini.

Nadine Blackwell is a community garden coordinator in Roanoke, Virginia. Sixty-five, still working part-time, and the person volunteers turn to when the shed needs a repair, the water pressure drops, or a barrel of soil arrives without instructions.

Last week a neighbor donated a fifty-five-gallon rain barrel for the garden shed. It came with no manual. Nadine went looking on YouTube and found what she was after. A local master gardener had posted a careful, patient forty-seven-minute walkthrough of an identical install, filmed at a demonstration garden two counties over.

The whole point of a good AI prompt is not to replace the thinking. It is to move the thinking to the right moment… the moment before you are standing in the sun with a drill in one hand and a phone in the other, trying to remember what the presenter said about pipe threading.

I know what you are thinking. This sounds like something for the young folks who grew up with computers. It is not.

If you can copy a link and paste it into a text box, you can do this. That is the entire technical skill required. Everything else is Gemini's job.

The link comes from tapping the Share button under any YouTube video, then choosing Copy link. The paste happens inside Gemini, right where you would type a message. From there, the model does the reading and the writing.

Try it once with a short video first, five or ten minutes, on any topic you are curious about — a recipe, a stretching routine, a phone-settings walkthrough. Watch how it works on something small. Then use it on the long one you have been putting off.

Pick a video you have been meaning to watch. Something practical. Something with steps.

Every recommendation an AI gives you comes with a hidden cost. A downside. A trade-off. Something you are giving up by choosing that option instead of another.

Most of the time, the AI does not mention it. Not because it is hiding anything, but because you did not ask. AI models tend to answer the question in front of them. If you ask for the best coffee maker under a hundred dollars, you get a coffee maker recommendation. You do not get the note about how loud it is, or how hard the filters are to find.

The Trade-Off Prompt is a small habit that changes that. Any time an AI recommends something to you… a product, a decision, a route, a plan… you add one line to your follow-up. And it saves you from decisions you would have quietly regretted later.

Sometimes the trade-offs will confirm your choice. Sometimes they will send you back to the drawing board. Either way, you will be making the decision with both eyes open, which is the whole point.
